Notes from Oppressed, about myths

EDCI 6306
22 Nov 2004

We don't have control over our heredity and not much control over our culture

from Freire's point of view, there is a sense in which the deck is stacked against humanity by and large
- if we don't try to unstack it in some ways, it will only get aggrevated over time by people who have little or no interest in us as human beings

pp 139-140 of Oppressed
- every culture deposits mythis
- deposited myths blind teh depositor and the depositee

Fourteen myths of oppressors
- oppressive order is a free society, or at least the best society (other myths are dependent on this myth of freedom to an extent if possible)
- all persons are free to work wherever they wish
- human rights are respected and worthy of esteem
- anyone who is industrious can become an entrepreneur
- the street vendor is as much an entrepreneur as the large business owner
- universal right to education
- equality of all individuals
- oppressor is the hero or defender of western Christian civilization, or in other realms the hero if eastern Confucian, Islamic, or Buddhist civilization
- the generosity of elites
- elites promote the advancement of the people and consequently, the people should believe what they have to say
- rebellion against oppression is a sin against God, Allah, or Yahweh
- private property is essential to personal human development
- the industriousness of the oppressors and the laziness and dishonesty of the oppressed
- mystery cards: the natural inferiority of the oppressed and the superiority of the oppressors

"right to work" state really means "right to fire" state

Ch 16 letters to Christina
- lots of advice for advisors

For next week:
- Oppressed chap 2
- Education for Crit Cons: Education as Practice of Freedom
