Intro to Freire and Brazilian
context
EDCI 6306
Freire
Marxism is one system of thought
that can help you think about how to change
society
Terms
Pedagogy:
uses term in a broader sense to mean one's philosophy of education as it is
related to a particular topic
- very
interested in social and political philosophy of
education
- not pedagogy in a narrow sense
(very much an adult educator, not just focused on education for the
young)
social/political philosophy can
be regarded as a synonym for pedagogy as Freire uses
it
"Oppressed"
-
uses it in broad and specific ways
-
oppressed person is someone who cannot do what he/she should legitimately be
allowed to do
- oppression most often
comes from ruling elite, but also can come from the oppressed people themselves
(he refers to those as
sub-oppressors)
poor, disenfranchised,
peasants, those without political or economic clout, the working class, the
unemployed
- these are the "oppressed" he is
most focused on
- the people who are often
not valued by the middle and upper class, and the
elites
WalMart is now the largest
grocery retailer in the US
Freire's
thinking is applicable and relevant not only to Brazil but the US as
well
- not just application to the economic
realm, but to educational and other areas
also
"hope"
-
big issue in Brazil: working class/unemployed and in many cases the middle class
felt like it was hopeless to try and change
things
- Freire rebells against the idea that
we must accept the status quo
- if you think
there is no way to change anything, that is a self-fulfilling
prophecy
- we make history, it is made: if
that is true there is hope for us changing
things
Freire repeatedly talks about
how important study is, there should be pleasure and joy involved in studying,
says it should not be boring and
dull
Freire has some works that are
very challenging and require a lot of thinking / hard work to get
through
2 weeks from tonight: we'll be
selecting which chapters we want to co-teach on from either "Letters to
Cristina" or "Pedagogy of
Freedom"
Video on
Brazil:

Paulo
emphasizes the idea that there is no such thing as
neutrality
his question: when something
is passed by government or changed in education, who is going to profit from
it?
- Friere advocated bringing all the
information to the table to analyze
it
contends that often we don't respect
the lives of people, so they can work 10 hours a day instead of
15
- when they go to school their languages
and dialects are respected
term third
world country has become a very derrogatory
statement
- there are third world situations
in the first world
says genuine
democracy is one of the most difficult endeavors anyone can
attempt
- the longer we wait the harder it
becomes
20% of Americans today already
don't have health insurance
What are
the chances of even becoming middle class if you are born lower class in
Lubbock?
