acceptance vs
tolerance
- acceptance is a move beyond
minimalistic tolerance
there is a
difference between accepting and tolerating the person and the
behavior
- important to distinguish between
what we are accepting and are not
accepting
-
the truth I problably need most is
the truth I disagree with
we should
humanize everyone regardless of how confused, mixed up, mentally unstable, etc
the person is
Freire is arguing for
equal respect of persons, whether they are theives, saints,
etc.
sometimes we go too far when we
emphasize "we need to affirm" this person's
opinion
- will affirm people's dignity and
worth / identity and integrity unconditionally, different than affirming their
opinions or beliefs
- to do otherwise is to
dehumanize
Pedagogy of the Oppressed
Chapter 1: Freire's position on "love"
-
love is an act
- stand against violence and
oppression
- not paternalistic
charity
- is confrontational by nature
(dialogical)
- starts seeing the oppressed
not in abstract categories (person is not an
abstraction)
-- love is rooted in the
personhood of others, seeing the personhood of
others
Freire does not advocate
violence as a first-response, but does not rule it out either probably because
it may in some cases be the only humanizing
response
when we get to the point of
dehumanizing the enemy and treating them as abstractions, then we are resorting
to self-destructive hate
Part of
Freire's utopian thought that he thinks is realistic: we can sustain our
humanity and the humanity of those we fight against when
rebelling
joy of life and living is a
big part of Freire's praxis of love
-
passion is a key part of this thinking and the action that goes with
it
