Letters to Christina 3 and 4 (a wonderful student presentation by Jacqueline E. Romano)

Do you remember how you learned to read and write?

- a lot of us don't remember because it didn't make an impact
- Freire is writing about things he remembered because they made an impact on him

American society tends to teach to read and write by the letters rather than the whole word

Freire says when we are teaching our kids to read and write, focus on the wholes not just the letters/parts

Third letter: major theme
- Fear, courage
-- house, wall clock, comfort
- parents
-- caring, love, teachers

if you have fear but you have the courage to educate your fear, you learn something

Learing perceptions
- reaaison d'etre
- read the world and the word
- learning experiences
-- learning the words not the letters
-- liason between home and school
-- parents impact and teacher impact

today parents don't seem to have the time to spend with kids
- comparatively speaking: we seem to not have the same quality time

joy of life

Lessons of life
- respect for elders
- perception of others
- culture and protocol
- language

Puritanism vs exaggeration
- to be pure: soul, mind, body
- innocent: babies come from a stork

Balance: warns new generations
Poet: "the rain pocked the ground..."

Fourth Letter
- flashback
- don't let the fear of what is difficult paralyze you (teachers as cultural workers: p. 27)
- difficulties with moving
-- father's health / death
-- first love
-- courage to say something

Changing schools
- teacher's presence in life

Respect for others' jobs
- distinguage how people work/act to different situations

Last thoughts
- Paulo's lifestayle seemed well rounded and simple, but rich in life experiences
- hat he lived in childhood and learned from it, applies to his writings and teachings
- it make sense to go to other readings and alayzie where he is coming from / how he arrived at his philosophies

pp 54-59 in politics on dialog
