Lessons learned from place based essay assignment

What did I learn about multiple literacies as a result of this place based essay assignment?

- we tend to only value a defined, narrow, and limited number of ways of perceiving, knowing and communicating in the traditional classroom
- There is great value in engaging all the senses and affect as well as intellect in relating to, perceiving, and understanding an area, a person, or a topic
- re-emphasized the interrleatedness and connectedness of knowledge and learning

What theory/hypothesis could I develop about multiple literacies as a result of this experience?
- Students who are required to engage in a context through multiple literacies will have greater long term retention than those who do not
- Students will exhibit greater levels of engagement and motivation
- Students will have more fun!

What are the implications for teaching language arts?
- the assignment must go beyond the traditional five paragraph essay
- we must value the experiences and perspectives of each student, by inviting them to bring those aspects of their mental life into the realm of the classroom
